Italy: Teatro dell’Oriuolo demolished and reimagined
Florence: The crumbling former premises of the Oriuolo Theatre in front of the Oblate Library have been demolished to make way for a new cultural space.
Erected in the 1950s a short distance from the Duomo, the former playhouse occupied 300 square metres, which will now be replaced by a piazza-cum-urban garden with a cultural focus in tribute to the space’s previous purpose.
The 600,000 euro campaign financed by the city council includes the demolition and reconstruction of a multifunctional outdoor venue for exhibition and film showings.
Closed for nearly 30 years and left derelict, Teatro dell’Oriuolo was one of the most dynamic theatres in Florence after the Second World War.
