Pakistani government approves to set up 200 million gallon water plant in Gwadar under CPEC
Islamabad: Pakistani government has approved to set up a 200 million gallon water plant in Gwadar under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry told journalists after a federal cabinet meeting that the cabinet had given approval for the CPEC’s drinking water project.
“Approval has been given to set up a 200 million gallon water plant in Gwadar. This is a CPEC project and it will enable the citizens of Gwadar to get clean water,” he mentioned.
Previously, the Senate Standing Committee on Planning, Development and Reforms was informed that water two million gallons of water was being supplied illegally on a daily basis which costs the consumers over Rs 800 million.
“At present, total demand of water in the city is around 6.5 million gallons per day, however, it is being supplied only two million gallons of water per day and the tankers fetch water from far off Mirani Dam, therefore one tanker costs over Rs 15000 to the consumers,” Balochistan Planning and Development Secretary, Muhammad Ali Kakar informed the committee.
He maintained that construction work of the nearby Aakra Dam was ready which was designed to provide 2.5 million gallons of water daily but there was no water in the dam due to fewer rains during the previous four years.
The meeting was informed that an amount of Pakistani Rs 400 million was required to refurbish the water treatment plant for which the Balochistan government had already committed and work on this plant would be started soon.
Gwadar is a hub of the CPEC projects including the Gwadar Port which is bound to become an international destination in the coming years.
