Over 100, 000 tons of fertilizers to be imported from China soon: PM’s aide

Lahore: Pakistani Special Assistant to Prime Minister Imran Khan on Food Security Jamshed lqbal Cheema has said that more than 100, 000 tons of fertilizers would soon be imported from China.
Speaking at a news conference here, Cheema contended that the government was providing a significant subsidy on gas to fertilizers’ manufacturing factories.
“The government provided a subsidy worth 132 billion (Pakistani) rupees on fertilizers. Over one hundred thousand (100, 000) tons of fertilizers would soon be imported from China,” he informed.
Cheema remarked that provision of flour at a lower price to people was one of the top priorities of the government.
He urged people to lodge complaints against those who are selling the flour at higher than fixed rates.
The SAPM said sugar production will witness a remarkable increase in comparison with the past. He said at present, the country has a stock of 4.6 million tons of wheat.
This month, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet had approved import of 50,000 tonnes of urea from China on an immediate basis.
The meeting of the ECC, presided over by Minister for Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin, allowed the import on a government-to-government basis and tasked the Trading Corporation of Pakistan with negotiating the price with a Chinese supplier authorised by the government of China for further import of urea.
The Fertiliser Manufacturers of Pakistan Advisory Council (FMPAC) had suggested to the government to import 100,000 tonnes of urea to build the buffer stock.
