Italy: Why keeping your clothes on could save you big bucks in Sorrento

Overlooking the breathtaking Bay of Naples, Sorrento is a popular place for soaking up the sun. But if you have plans to stroll through the streets shirtless or in a bathing suit, you may pay a hefty fine. On July 6, Mayor Massimo Coppola issued an order banning people from walking around shirtless or in a swimsuit, and fining them if they do, according to his Facebook post.

People who violate the new order will face a fine from 25 euros to 500 euros (about $500 U.S.). Coppola suggests that such clothing (or lack thereof) makes locals and more modest tourists uncomfortable, and he’s worried about the city’s image.

It’s a matter of decorum. “In this way we want to protect and improve the livability of the city, the quality of life and the decor inside the center and public spaces,” Coppola wrote.

Sorrento municipal police officers will now be patrolling the coastal town on the lookout for those walking around shirtless or in bikinis. Police will apparently give tourists a warning first, and those who don’t comply will be fined.

Italians take a lot of pride in their appearance and usually dress nicely for any kind of public outing. Even when going shopping, Italians dress nicely.”

Keep these new rules in mind as you pack for your trip. Ladies will want to include a couple of summery cover-ups or sun dresses. Men will need casual shirts to slip on when they leave the beach. This is simply good, common sense.
