Italy: More than 1,300 irregular migrants reach over past 48 hours

Rome: More than 1,300 irregular migrants have reached Italy’s Lampedusa island over the past two days, local media reported.

A total of 28 boats from Libya and Tunisia, carrying 1,397 migrants, arrived in Lampedusa over the past 48 hours, according to Rai News 24.

Meanwhile, it was also reported that the Agrigento Governorate is planning to evacuate some of the migrants from Lampedusa island to the mainland.

As of Feb. 17, a total of 9,254 irregular migrants have arrived in Italy this year, which is more than double compared with the same period last year, according to the Interior Ministry data.

Nearly 104,000 irregular migrants arrived in Italy in 2022.
