MSC’s mega 24,000 TEU boxship named in Italy

Rome: MSC Nicola Mastro, a 24,166 TEU containership owned by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), has been christened in Trieste, Italy.

The naming ceremony took place on 3 September at the Trieste Marine Terminal (TMT), with more than 600 guests in attendance.

Hudong-Zhonghua, a Chinese shipbuilder, designed the vessel. The ship’s overall length is 400 metres, its moulded width is 61.5 metres, and its moulded depth is 33.2 metres. It has a capacity of 24,166 containers.

This ceremony comes three months after APM Terminals (APMT) announced the arrival of MSC Loreto at APMT Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The vessel was named after Captain Nicola Mastro, a long-time head of MSC’s cargo sector. MSC Group President, Diego Aponte, paid tribute to Mastro in his speech.

Aponte said: “He was one of the most important pillars of MSC. A great professional, one of the best captains of our fleet. A cheerful person who always found a solution to everything. But above all a very close friend with whom I travelled the world, and I’ve learned so much from being close to him for so many years.”
