Pakistan ready to accommodate China’s internet traffic: IT Minister
Islamabad: Pakistani Caretaker Federal Minister for Information Technology (IT) and Telecom Dr Umar Saif, said that Pakistan was ready to accommodate China’s internet traffic.
In discussions with representatives from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Special Communication Organization (SCO), and various telecom operators, he highlighted a project aimed at creating a corridor for China to connect to Europe via Pakistan.
This initiative is expected to bring significant economic benefits to Pakistan by combining the existing optical fiber cable network from Khunjerab to Karachi with a submarine cable for China’s traffic, optimizing internet traffic flow and enhancing connectivity.
Dr Saif emphasized the potential for multi-million-dollar opportunities in Pakistan and the role of the Special Investment Facilitation Council Forum in promoting IT and Telecom sector initiatives.
He mentioned that the project’s primary focus was the expansion of Pakistan’s optical fiber cable network, targeting an increase from 180,000 kilometers to 300,000 kilometers and the establishment of 20,000 towers to enhance overall telecom infrastructure.
Dr Saif also addressed challenges faced by telecom operators under the Right of Way policy, urging swift resolution for a seamless policy rollout and improved connectivity.
