EU-New Zealand deal showcases the potential of sustainable trade
Brussels: The ratification of the EU-New Zealand free trade agreement (FTA) is an important victory for Europe! Strong partnerships across the world are key, especially with likeminded democratic states such as New Zealand, which is a strong ally.
This is only the second free trade agreement that the European Parliament will ratify during this mandate. With this deal, we will ensure new opportunities for EU companies and the diversification of our supply chains.
This free trade agreement is particularly important because it sets a new benchmark for sustainability and includes strong and enforceable commitments to protect environment. The Paris Climate Agreement and core labour rights must therefore be respected.
Karin Karlsbro (Sweden, Liberalerna), Renew Europe shadow rapporteur on this file has declared:
“I’m very proud that the European Parliament is about to ratify the most modern Free Trade Agreement ever in terms of sustainability. I welcome that it is also strong on gender equality. In times of uncertainty we need to keep our allies close, and this agreement will strengthen our already strong bond with New Zealand.”
Ulrike Müller (Germany, Freie Wähler), Renew Europe MEP and chair of the delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand, added:
“Negotiators from both sides have done an excellent job, delivering a highly ambitious Free Trade Agreement especially with regards to sustainability aspects and shared values. In my view, the agreement highlights the increasing of our trade and climate. I also welcome the chapter on Māori trade and economic cooperation. Achieving trade deals with like-minded partners in the Asia-Pacific region is important for the EU.”
