Italy suspends funding to UNRWA – Tajani
Italy has joined the United States and Canada in suspending funding to the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA after Israel said several staff members had allegedly been involved in the October 7 Hamas attacks, Foreign Minister and Deputy Premier Antonio Tajani said on Saturday.
“The Italian government has suspended funding to UNRWA after the atrocious attack by Hamas against Israel on October 7,” Tajani wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Allied countries have recently taken the same decision.
We are committed to humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian population, while protecting the security of Israel,” he added.
UNRWA immediately terminated the contracts of the staff members involved and has opened an investigation into the claims.
