Inter Milan legend delighted by Italy goalkeepers

Milan: Inter Milan legend Walter Zenga believes Italian football is reaping the fruits of solid work in the goalkeeping department.

The 63-year-old was one of the strongest custodians of his generation. As a Nerazzurri youth product, he managed to climb the ranks and become a stalwart in the first team for more than a decade.

Zenga was also an Italy international who collected 58 caps throughout his illustrious career.

Therefore, the Inter icon is pleased to see his country producing a superb wave of talented goalkeepers.

“It’s difficult to list all the top-level Italian goalkeepers around,” notes the former shot-stopper in his interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport via FcInterNews.

“I hope I don’t forget anyone. We have Donnarumma, Vicario, Provedel, Meret, Di Gregorio, Caprile, Montipò, Terracciano, and Falcone just to mention the starters.

“And how about Ravaglia and Perin who always perform well when they come in? We have an abundance of talent.

“This is because we have the right structure to produce goalkeepers. We know how to help them improve and remain consistent in their performances.

Zenga feels that the school of Italian goalkeepers is enjoying a superb campaign, even though Inter, Milan and Juventus rely on foreigners between the sticks.

“I think this is a splendid season for the Italian school of goalkeepers. Then we would have to see how they will perform in European competitions.

“But this is a much more complex discussion which also involves the big three of Serie A where the starters are foreigners”.

The Nerazzurri legend also reserved special praise for Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi.

“You could see that he had great qualities and that in recent years he was ready to take flight.”
