Italy’s Edison officially opens 41-MW solar park in Sicily

Rome: Italian energy supplier Edison SpA (BIT:EDNR) has officially opened a 41-MW solar photovoltaic (PV) park in Sicily, pressing ahead its strategy to grow its renewable energy fleet at home by the end of the decade.

The Solecaldo PV plant is located in the town of Aidone, Enna Province, and is expected to generate electricity equal to the annual power demand of 26,500 homes, Edison said on Tuesday. The output of 71.5 GWh will offset more than 29,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Construction works at the site were launched in Novemebr 2020 and the plant was connected to the grid in December 2023.

“Thanks to the new Aidone plant we further strengthen our presence in the region, increasing the share of renewable energy available to the area,” said CEO Nicola Monti. He added that the company intends to install an additional 300 MW of renewable energy capacity in the region over the next three years.

The project was executed to support Edison’s growth plan from a year ago, under which the unit of EDF Electricite de France SA will add around 1 GW of wind and 2 GW of solar, as well as 1 GW of renewables for green hydrogen production and energy storage.
