Pakistan committed to ‘One China’ policy: PM Shehbaz Sharif

Islamabad: Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the ‘One China’ policy, emphasizing that Pakistan regards Taiwan as an inalienable part of the People’s Republic of China and supports China’s efforts towards national reunification.

In a post on social media platform X, Prime Minister Sharif reiterated that as a steadfast ally and strategic partner of China, Pakistan has consistently backed China’s position on Taiwan and will continue to do so.

He stated that the so-called elections or changes in the self-proclaimed government in Taiwan do not alter the objective facts regarding the Taiwan issue.

The ‘One China’ policy that Prime Minister Sharif referenced is a diplomatic principle that acknowledges and supports Beijing’s stance that there is only one Chinese government. This policy is central to Beijing’s diplomatic relations.

China considers Taiwan a part of its territory, destined for reunification with the mainland. Under the ‘One China’ policy, any country seeking diplomatic relations with China must sever official ties with Taiwan, which is part of mainland China.
