Italy: The beautiful seaside city named the best place in Europe to visit this year
Rome: This beautiful city is said to be one of the best places to visit in Europe this summer as its landmark is voted Italy’s finest.
Taranto is located on the beautiful Ionian Sea with a rich history that has made the city well worth a visit. It still serves as an important commercial port as well as the main Italian naval base.
It’s main drawing point is the Castello Aragonese which has been voted the best landmark to visit by travel experts at Pompeii Tours & Tickets this summer.
Officially called the Castel San Angelo, it was built on the site of older fortifications dating to Greek occupation in the third and fourth centuries BC.
Now, the fortress is open for public tours and is widely visited by tourists. The fortress consists of wide and short halls, a characteristic element of Norman culture, and spherical halls and internal walkways.
For those hoping to learn about the rich history behind Taranto, the Museo Nazionale Archeologico di Taranto is described as one of Italy’s most important archaeological museums.
Dedicated to the archaeology of ancient Taranto – once named Taras – there are a number of artefacts to admire, including the largest collection of Greek terracotta figures in the world.
The city is also home to an 11th-century cathedral dedicated to San Cataldo, an Irish monk who lived and was buried here in the 7th century.
It is in one of Puglia’s oldest Romanesque buildings and is a popular tourist spot for those visiting the city.

Thanks to all the fishermen that still operate in the city, fresh seafood is on the menu at most restaurants in the area. The mixture of fresh and sea water in the bay creates an ideal environment for cultivating shellfish like mussels and oysters, which they have done in Taranto since the third century BC.
