Cristiano Ronaldo in tears after missing extra-time penalty for Portugal at euro 2024, scores in victorious shoot-out
Lisbon: Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty for Portugal in the country’s round of 16 match against Slovenia was saved by goalkeeper Jan Oblak, leaving the captain distraught and in tears.
Ronaldo stepped up to take the penalty in the first half of extra-time with a spot in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals at stake, but Oblak tipped the ball onto the post. Portugal went on to win the resulting penalty shoot-out.
Shortly after, the players took a brief break as they reached the halfway point of extra time. Ronaldo was visibly distraught and was spotted in floods of tears.
The Portugal captain even needed a pep talk from team-mate Bruno Fernandes as they walked back out for the second half of extra time.
Fortunately for Ronaldo, Portugal still progressed to the quarter-finals by winning the resulting penalty shoot-out.
Benjamin Sesko had an excellent chance to win the match for Slovenia in the second half of extra-time, but Diogo Costa saved the one-on-one and the game finished 0-0.
In the shoot-out, Costa saved Slovenia’s first penalty, before Ronaldo stepped up for his second spot-kick of the night. He seemed to have recovered from his previous outburst, coolly slotting the ball past Oblak.
Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva scored Portugal’s remaining penalties as Costa kept out a further two from Slovenia.
Awaiting in Friday’s quarter-final is France, who edged past Belgium 1-0 in their round-of-16 tie.
