Bulgaria’s proposed next aid for Ukraine to include surplus ammo

Sofia: It is proposed that Bulgaria’s next package of aid for Ukraine will include ammunition and equipment that have been found surplus to requirements of Bulgaria’s military, caretaker Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov said on July 22.

The proposal is to be put to the caretaker government for approval and after a decision is made, Bulgaria will coordinate with allies and Ukraine to arrange logistics.

Zapryanov said that the proposal was in its final stage and could be submitted to the caretaker government on July 22.

Zapryanov said that the offer to Ukraine would include ammunition of “certain types”.

“This package will also be connected with an agreement with an allied country for compensation, similar to the previous package that we sent and for which we have already received, as I said, about 30 million euro or about 60 million leva compensation, which we are directing to the modernisation projects of the Bulgarian army,” he said.

Bulgaria supports the entire package of measures to help Ukraine to be able to defend itself against Russian aggression, to achieve full interoperability of the armed forces and to move closer to membership of the Alliance, Zapryanov said.

He said that at the Nato meeting in Washington, Bulgaria had supported the decisions regarding the strengthening of the deterrent and defence potential of the Alliance.

Nato is united, and has capabilities and military superiority over any potential adversary, Zapryanov said.
