Egonu crowned as MVP in Italy golden campaign in Paris

Rome: One of the main reasons for Italy winning their first-ever Olympic gold medal in women’s volleyball at the Paris 2024 Games, star opposite Paola Egonu was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, which ended on Sunday.

The 25-year-old opposite was instrumental as the Italians produced an undefeated campaign of six victories to claim the title, ending the tournament as its second-best scorer, with 110 points – 95 kills, seven blocks, one ace. Playing in her second Olympics, she was particularly important in their sweep over the United States in the gold medal match, producing 22 points.

Just over a month ago, the opposite had also been recognized as the MVP of the Volleyball Nations League 2024, when she led Italy to win the tournament for the second time in three years.

Egonu was one of five Italian players selected for the Paris 2024 Dream Team – the ideal formation also counted on one player from silver medalists the United States and another from bronze medalists Brazil.
