Romina terms women’s empowerment crucial for green economy goals

Islamabad: Coordinator to Prime Minister on Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam has termed women empowerment and gender equality vital for achieving green economy goals in Asian countries.
She was addressing a news conference in connection with Regional Parliamentarians’ Meeting on Gender Empowerment for Green Economy in Islamabad Tuesday.
Romina Khurshid Alam said it is encouraging to note that parliamentarians of twenty Asian countries demonstrated political will for enhancing women’s empowerment in several sectors for achieving the green economy goals.
The participating parliamentarians also unanimously agreed on twelve-point Islamabad Declaration on Gender Empowerment for Green Economy encompassing to address harmful social and gender norms that limit the potential of women.
The declaration includes to invest in emergency preparedness, anticipatory actions, and targeted disaster risk reduction plans and further recognized the importance of data and evidence collection with the major focus on the needs of vulnerable groups, such as women.
It was agreed to promote enabling environments that eliminate discrimination against women and empower them to make informed decisions about their lives.
