London: The UK Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting and valuing international students, emphasising that they are welcome to study in the UK.

In a new video message, Rt. Hon Bridget Phillipson MP, the Secretary of State for Education, expressed her admiration for the courage and determination of students who choose to pursue their education abroad.

MP Bridget Phillipson praised international students for their willingness to take a leap of faith, develop new skills, and chase new horizons. She highlighted the importance of fostering a Britain that looks outwards with optimism and builds bridges of friendship with other nations.

For international students considering studying in the UK, Phillipson’s message is clear: if you meet the criteria for university admission and obtain a student visa, both the British government and the people of the UK will warmly welcome you.

At the University of Portsmouth, we share this sentiment and are proud to offer a supportive, affordable, and enriching environment for our students.

Portsmouth was recently ranked as one of the most affordable places in the UK for students to live, and the most affordable in the South East, according to the NatWest Student Living Index 2024. The city was ranked 6th in England and 7th in the UK, based on a survey of over 6,000 students that assessed income, living costs, and other factors.

Chris Chang, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement and Student Life), said: “Portsmouth has so much to offer—beaches, great places to eat, cool indie shops, music venues, and plenty of green space—all without breaking the bank for students. Affordability, coupled with our commitment to academic excellence and student support, makes Portsmouth an ideal destination for university. We are dedicated to providing an enriching and accessible environment where students can thrive both academically and personally.”

The NatWest Student Living Index results follow Portsmouth’s recent recognition in the National Student Survey (NSS), where it was ranked in the top 20 universities in England for academic support. Additionally, the University reclaimed its place in the top 35 of the Guardian University Guide, rising 34 places to 33rd overall—an achievement that underscores our commitment to student satisfaction and academic excellence.

With strong government support for international students and Portsmouth’s reputation as an affordable, welcoming, and academically excellent city, the University of Portsmouth is an ideal choice for students from around the world looking to broaden their horizons and achieve their academic goals.
