Islamabad: British High Commissioner in Pakistan Jane Mariott Saturday Matt Cannell as the new Deputy High Commissioner to Pakistan, marking the beginning of an exciting chapter.
With a distinguished career spanning diverse roles in diplomacy and development, Cannell brings a wealth of experience to this critical position.
Prior to his appointment, Cannell served as the Deputy High Commissioner and Development Director at the British High Commission in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from March 2023 to 2024.
He initially joined the mission in March 2022 as Development Director, where he played a pivotal role in advancing UK-Bangladesh cooperation on development priorities.
Cannell’s career reflects a deep commitment to global diplomacy and development. He served as the Portfolio Director for Transformation at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), leading the integration of the Department for International Development (DfID) and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). His work in this capacity contributed to the establishment of a more cohesive and efficient FCDO.
With over half his career spent overseas, Cannell has undertaken a wide range of high-profile assignments. From 2014 to 2017, he was the Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative for Sudan and South Sudan, navigating complex geopolitical challenges in the region.
His prior roles include serving in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2014 and representing the UK on the governing boards of key UN agencies such as UNICEF, UNDP, UNFPA, and UN Women from 2006 to 2010 at the UK Mission to the United Nations. These experiences highlight his strategic acumen and deep understanding of international development and foreign policy.
As Deputy High Commissioner, Cannell aims to further strengthen the longstanding partnership between the UK and Pakistan, building on shared values and priorities. His extensive background in development and diplomacy positions him to foster collaboration in areas such as trade, climate resilience, education, and humanitarian assistance.
