Rome: easyJet has announced its ambitious expansion plans in Italy, cementing the country as its second-largest market. Starting in spring 2025, the airline will open new bases at Milan Linate and Rome Fiumicino airports, positioning eight aircraft across the two hubs and creating approximately 300 jobs.

This move follows easyJet’s approval as the short-haul remedy taker as part of Lufthansa’s acquisition of a stake in ITA Airways.

The European Commission’s decision enables easyJet to take over slots at Milan Linate and Rome Fiumicino, expanding its operations to better serve Italy’s main cities.

With the addition of these two bases, easyJet will operate 38 aircraft across four key locations in Italy, including Milan Malpensa and Naples.

The airline will also connect travelers to and from 20 Italian airports, serving over 21 million customers annually.

Kenton Jarvis, easyJet CFO and incoming CEO, emphasized the significance of this milestone: “We are pleased to be approved as the short-haul remedy taker in Milan and Rome.

This ensures that the Italian market remains competitive, with easyJet offering a wider choice of destinations and affordable fares.

Passengers flying to and from Linate and Fiumicino will benefit from new services starting in spring.

This expansion underscores our commitment to Italy, providing opportunities for continued investment, job creation, and growth.”

Milan Malpensa, already easyJet’s largest base in continental Europe, will remain central to the airline’s network.

The airline recently celebrated carrying 100 million passengers to and from Milan Malpensa since it began operations in 1998.

Over the past 26 years, easyJet has flown more than 210 million passengers to and from Italy, democratizing air travel in the region.

Lorenzo Lagorio, Country Manager for Italy at easyJet, added: “Having carried more than 210 million passengers to and from Italy, we are proud to have played a significant role in making air travel accessible and convenient for Italians.

We are thrilled to expand our presence in Milan and Rome, creating new jobs and offering more travel choices for our customers.

This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our incredible team, and we look forward to welcoming new crew members to our Linate and Fiumicino bases.”

This expansion marks a major milestone for easyJet, further reinforcing its role as a key player in the Italian aviation market.

The move not only enhances connectivity but also strengthens the airline’s commitment to supporting local economies and delivering affordable, reliable travel options across Europe.
