Erbil: Nechirvan Barzani, the President of the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), met with Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto in Erbil to discuss counterterrorism efforts and recent developments in the region.

The meeting reflects ongoing international cooperation in addressing regional security challenges, including the resurgence of terrorist groups like Daesh, and the importance of strategic partnerships for stability in Iraq and the broader Middle East.

Sustainable international cooperation: Minister Crosetto emphasized the importance of sustained international collaboration in tackling shared security challenges. He also reiterated Italy’s commitment to supporting the region.

Italy has actively participated in the international coalition against Daesh, and the discussions also touched on the country’s ongoing contributions to Iraq and the broader Middle East in terms of military and strategic support.

The meeting underscored the importance of bilateral cooperation between Italy and the KRG, particularly in counterterrorism efforts and maintaining regional stability.

Crosetto’s visit to Iraq included a meeting with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani in Baghdad, where bilateral relations, Italy’s support within the international coalition, and developments in Syria were also on the agenda. This reflects Italy’s continued engagement in Iraq and the region’s security landscape.

The continuation of international cooperation, particularly in counterterrorism and regional stability, is crucial as Iraq and neighboring countries face ongoing security challenges.

Efforts to prevent the resurgence of groups like Daesh and manage the evolving political dynamics in Syria will likely remain key priorities for international partners, including Italy.
