Household wealth in real estate doubles in 10 years

Lisbon: The net wealth accumulated by Portuguese families exceeded 1.1 trillion euros by June last year, a growth of 72% in ten years.

Real estate continued to be the main refuge for savings worth around 700 billion euros, having almost doubled in value during this period.

Household financial assets grew between 2014 and 2024 (such as shares and deposits). But the increase was particularly significant in housing and real estate, as it rose 77% in ten years, now representing 60% of total household wealth, according to data from the European Central Bank (ECB) cited by Jornal de Negócios. This growth in our country was more noticeable than in the eurozone (47%).

What is also striking is that, in the last ten years, the wealthiest families have gained space in real estate assets, holding 35% of the total in the second quarter of 2024. Meanwhile, 50% of lower-income families hold only 15% of the total properties, as can be read in the same publication.
