Embassy Sofia supports Bulgarian special needs athletes

Sofia: Embassy Sofia staff participated in a holiday basketball practice with Bulgaria’s only unified basketball club, Unified Sports for All, Dec. 16, 2024.

Co-founded by a Fulbright alumna, the club promotes social opportunity by pairing Bulgarian players with and without special needs for recreational basketball and international competitions.

Embassy staff frequently join the club for weekly team practices, and in November 2024, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs brought 10 unified basketball coaches from across Bulgaria to the United States on a Sports Diplomacy program.

The coaches visited Special Olympics headquarters in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, participated in unified sports programs at six schools, and attended a Boston Celtics game.
