France’s Macron calls Trump tariff pause “fragile”

Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron has called US President Donald Trump’s move to delay sweeping reciprocal tariffs for 90 days a “fragile” pause.
In a post on X, Macron argued that the “partial suspension of American tariffs for 90 days sends out a signal and leaves the door open for talks.”
“But this pause is a fragile one,” he said, noting that Trump’s prior 25% tariffs on European steel, aluminum, and cars remain place. A broad 10% tariff on all other products is also still in effect, Macron flagged.
He added that the halt only equates to “90 days of uncertainty for our businesses, on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond.”
Macron backed the unity of France and the European Union in their response to the tariffs and their approach to potential negotiations with the White House.
On Thursday, the EU said it will put upcoming countermeasures to Trump’s tariffs on hold for 90 days to give talks with the White House “a chance.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement that she “took note” of Trump’s tariff pause. But she warned that, if discussions with Washington “are not satisfactory,” the bloc’s retaliatory levies will come into effect.
“Preparatory work on further countermeasures continues,” von der Leyen said. “As I have said before, all options remain on the table.”
