ECNEC approves ML-1 upgradation
Islamabad: Pakistan’s Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) reviewed and approved several key projects including the Upgradation of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)’s existing Main Line-1 (ML-1) at a re-modified scope.
The approvals were granted during an ECNEC meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar.
One of the major highlights of the meeting was the approval of the Upgradation of Pakistan Railways’ existing Main Line-1 (ML-1) at a re-modified scope. The ECNEC directed that Phase I of the project, covering a 929 km stretch from Karachi to Multan, should be prioritized.
This upgrade is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency and capacity of Pakistan’s rail network, fostering better connectivity and economic growth.
In addition to ML-1, the ECNEC also approved the “Flood Response Emergency Housing Project (Phase-I),” funded through a loan from the Asian Development Bank. This project is designed to support flood-affected communities in Sindh by facilitating the community-led reconstruction of over 250,000 flood-resilient houses.
Other water sector projects approved include the Gomal Zam Multipurpose Project, the Raising of Mangla Dam Project, and the Golen Gol Hydropower Project. All three are now progressing towards completion.
The committee also approved the “Development of Integrated Transit Trade Management System,” which envisions the construction and development of state-of-the-art border crossing points at Torkham, Chaman, and Wagah. This project includes the establishment of a Land Port Authority and the implementation of digital end-to-end tracking of containerized cargo.
Further approvals by the ECNEC included the “Karachi Neighborhood Improvement Project (KNIP),” with its implementation period extended by six months to 31st December 2024.
KNIP aims to enhance the accessibility, usability, and attractiveness of public spaces such as roads, streets, parks, open spaces, and public buildings in selected Karachi neighborhoods.
The construction of a Border Terminal at the Pakistan-Afghanistan Border in Badini and the upgradation of a 40-km road from Murgha Faqirzai to Khan Dagar Main Badini Road in District Saifullah were approved, further supporting infrastructure development and regional connectivity.
