At least 10 dead from earthquake in Italy
At least 10 people have been reported dead from the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that hit the Italian city of Amatrice today, in the early hours of the morning, reports.
The mayor of this municipality, Sergio Pirozzi, said that many other people are trapped under the ruins.
“The roads are blocked. Half of the city has disappeared”, said the mayor of this municipality, Sergio Pirozzi.
“There are people who are trapped under the ruins… There have been landslides and the bridge may collapse,” he added.
The Agency for Civil Protection in Italy has said that the earthquake was “severe” and there have been reports of damage in mountainous areas as well. It was written on Facebook that on the Gran Sasso mountain a large part of the rock collapsed during the earthquake.
“We have news of injuries and collapses of buildings”, said the head of this agency, Frabrizio Curcio.
This earthquake was also felt in the city of Rome and its epicenter was near l’Aquila, where an earthquake of 5.9 on the Richter scale years ago left 309 people dead, reports Rel.
Curcio added that the last earthquake was severe and in terms of intensity it can be compared to the earthquake that hit l’Aquila years ago, but that today’s earthquake may be less deadly because it hit a less populated area .
The cities most affected by this earthquake are Accumoli, Amatrice, Posta and Arquata del Tronto.
