Meloni hails ‘excellent’ Italy-Greece relations, announces February conference
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Thursday hailed Italy’s “excellent” relations with Greece, emphasizing their shared geostrategic identity and close cooperation on key issues such as security, migration and climate challenges.
“Our two countries share a common geostrategic identity,” Meloni said during her annual press conference, highlighting her strong working relationship with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. “We collaborate on many issues with a shared approach, including security, defense, migration – which affects few European countries as profoundly as ours – and environmental efforts to address extreme climate events.”
Meloni pointed to the growing influence of southern European nations, referencing the recent North-South Summit. “Countries once seen as ‘not exactly serious’ are now united in addressing major European security concerns,” she said.
Looking ahead, Meloni announced an Italy-Greece intergovernmental conference in Rome this February, during which new agreements and a joint declaration will be signed. “Our goal is to formalize the breadth of our cooperation with agreements on particularly important issues,” she said.
Meloni also highlighted their collaboration within the European Council and forums such as the MED9 and MED5. “Prime Minister Mitsotakis and I sit at the same table, playing leading roles in shaping the region’s future,” she added.
