Italy’s carnival festivities delight locals and tourists alike

Rome: Italy has officially entered the Carnival season, filling its squares and streets with a riot of colour and music.
In Venice and Viareggio, the party has already begun, while other cities are finalising preparations for the coming days. From Casanova-themed pageantry in Venice to Putignano’s 631st Carnival, the country is once again proving it knows how to celebrate in style.
Venice remains at the heart of Carnival excitement, dedicating this year’s festival to the age of Giacomo Casanova. Over 20,000 revellers gathered in Piazza San Marco on the opening night for a romantic extravaganza called ‘Scream Your Love,’ where couples declared their devotion for all to hear. The event was hosted by TV personality Marco Maccarini and radio presenter Chiara Perale, with Principe Maurice and Manuel Bruttomesso portraying Casanova and Don Giovanni. Meanwhile, the party continued on Sunday morning with a parade of decorated boats along the Grand Canal, featuring the beloved papier-mâché Pantegana bursting open in a colourful display of biodegradable confetti and smoke. Opera fans can also enjoy “Casanova Operapop,” a lively show that captures the Venetian spirit of adventure and intrigue.
