Venice: Celebrations to mark 1,600 years of Venice begin officially on 25 March, with special events in honour of the milestone birthday set to take place throughout this year and next.

The anniversary events will illustrate the rich history and culture of the lagoon city which was founded, according to tradition, on 25 March 421.

Legend says that it was on this date that the first cornerstone was laid at the S. Giacomo di Rialto church, known by Venetians as S. Giacometto.

The programme of events takes place under the shadow of covid-19 but organisers say ‘Venezia 1600’ is a sign of resilience, amid hopes that the milestone will act as a rebirth for the city whose crucial tourism industry has been decimated by the pandemic.

The first anniversary event will be a Mass at St Mark’s Basilica – broadcast live to avoid crowds – at 11.00 on 25 March on the Antenna 3 network and on the Gente Veneta Facebook page.

At 16.00 bells will ring out at length across Venice while at 18.30 state broadcaster RAI will pay tribute to Venice with a special feature dedicated to 16 centuries of Venetian life.

More than 200 events are scheduled between now and 2022, covid-19 restrictions permitting, with highlights including the Venice Boat Fair (29 May-6 June) and the Architecture Biennale, from 22 May.
