Islamabad: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has called upon Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani to convene an urgent meeting of the Senate on the matter of a requisition rejected by the Senate.

The requisition in concern, is related to PPP requesting for a session to discuss “skyrocketing inflation and inflated electricity bills causing grave concern and unrest among the general public”.

In a letter addressed to Chairman Senate Sanjrani, PPP’s Senator Taj Haider voiced concerns and sought clarification on the matter of the requisition. The letter highlighted that the Senate Secretariat had reported that five members had withdrawn their signatures from the requisition submitted by the PPP.

However, the names of these individuals have not been disclosed to the PPP, despite repeated requests for this information.

Furthermore, the letter raised questions about the process by which these members purportedly withdrew their signatures. It asked whether these individuals had formally requested the Senate Secretariat in writing to retract their support for the requisition.

The PPP emphasized that the Constitution and the Rules do not empower any entity to unilaterally withdraw a signature, questioning the role of the Chairman Senate or the Senate Secretariat as decision-makers in this matter. It underlined that the Constitution does not grant the Chairman Senate’s office the authority to make such determinations.

In closing, the letter conveyed hope that the decision to reject the requisition would be reevaluated, keeping the interests of the people in mind. The PPP expressed optimism that Chairman Senate Sanjrani would heed their call and promptly convene a Senate meeting, addressing the pressing concerns surrounding the requisition issue.
