Scholz welcomes EU security commitment to Ukraine
Brussels: The European Union has signed an agreement with Ukraine committing to security cooperation and long-term support for the country which is under attack from Russia.
The document was signed at an EU summit meeting in Brussels by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President Charles Michel. Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz described the security pledge as a “sign of solidarity at a difficult time.”
The security commitment includes elements such as a crisis mechanism. It also covers closer collaboration between Ukrainian arms manufacturers and the EU, and cooperation in the fight against cyber attacks and disinformation. The European Union also plans to contribute to a G7 initiative to provide a short-term €50 billion package of aid to Ukraine. The Federal Chancellor also said the €50 billion should be provided “quickly and efficiently.”
